Field trip at Thong Nhat hospital, Vietnam
There has been an exponential increase in the number of mobile health (mHealth) applications available to support the management of osteoarthritis (OA). The adoption of these mHealth applications is largely influenced by individual user preferences.
In order to better understand the decision-making processes underlying this adoption, we employed a multi-method research approach. Specifically, we conducted a systematic literature review and a representative survey to examine user preferences regarding key features of mHealth applications. In addition, we initiated the recruitment of OA patients in Austria and Vietnam to capture diverse perspectives, including those from a developing country context.
On August 1, 2025, our PhD student Nguyen Truong met with Dr. Toan Vo Thanh, Head of Orthopaedic Department at Thong Nhat Hospital, a level 1 general hospital in Vietnam, to discuss strategies for patient recruitment. The Orthopaedic Department at Thong Nhat Hospital manages approximately 250 patients per day. Of these, around 50% are diagnosed with osteoarthritis. Furthermore, in collaboration with the Department of Rheumatology, the hospital organises bi-monthly educational sessions for patients with osteoporosis, which are offered free of charge.
