Michael Bonelli is Associate Professor at the Division of Rheumatology (MedUniWien) and PI at the Ludwig Boltzman Institute (LBI) of Arthritis and Rehabilitation. His experimental research team focuses on 4 research areas:
autoimmunity:
The research team investigates factors that drive the development of pathogenic T cells and to study critical transcription factors, important for the balance of effector versus regulatory T cells.
Structural immunity:
Synovial fibroblasts have recently been recoginzed as important cell types for inflammatory joint diseases. His research team studies fibroblast-immune cell interactions to understand the role of cell-cell interactions as drivers of synovial inflammation.
Epigenetics:
His research group investigates the influence of transcriptional and epigenetic modifications on development and stability of various immune cells under inflammatory conditions. Within an ongoing SFB project the research group investigates the potential of HDAC inhibitors as a new treatment option for patients with autoimune diseases.
Precision medicine:
Automated image analysis pipelines allow to understand the role of cellular interactions and to investigate the mechanisms of action of immunomodulatory drugs. The reseatch team investigates drug targets and provides in vivo validation tools which ultimately aim for a personalized medicine approach.
