Markus Ritter is Full Professor and Head of the Institute for Physiology and Pathophysiology, Coordinator of the Center for Physiology, Pathophysiology and Biophysics, and Director of the Gastein Research Institute at the Paracelsus Medical University (PMU) Salzburg. Within the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Arthritis and Rehabilitation he was head of the partner board and currently acts as principal investigator. His research encompasses basic, clinical and patient oriented outcome research with special emphasis on chondrocyte electrophysiology, electromechanical (dys)function, cell death, inflammation and rheumatic disorders. Markus Ritter is an approved specialized in both medical physiology and internal medicine. He is a leading scientist in the field of cell volume regulation and has a special interest in the effects of low-dose alpha irradiation (therapy) on health effects and outcomes of patients with musculoskeletal diseases. Markus Ritter has served as Dean of Research at PMU, and two times as president of the Austrian Physiological Society. He is visiting professor at the Kathmandu University School of Medical Sciences, and founder as well as editor-in-chief of the journal Paracelsus Proceedings of Experimental Medicine (PPExMed).
