Burkhard Klösch is a senior scientist, and a key researcher at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Arthritis and Rehabilitation.

Since 2018 his group is located at the Karl-Franzens University of Graz at the Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology (head: Prof. B Mayer).

His fields of research are the role of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and naturally occurring polyphenols (resveratrol) in physiological and pathophysiological processes, especially their beneficial effects on inflammatory and degenerative processes of the joints (rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis).

His second research topic includes the investigation of the effects of novel developed epigenetic drugs (histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors and histone acetylation (HAT) inhibitors) on the differentiation and inflammatory processes in chondrocytes from patients with OA. These studies are performed in close cooperation with Pre-generate (head: J Rosser), a start-up company in Vienna and Prof T Pap, a world-renowned specialist for OA.

Thirdly, in cooperation with the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Traumatology (head: Prof J Grillari), in vivo studies with a novel developed H2S-releasing COX-2 inhibitor in osteoclast differentiation are ongoing.
