Michael Bonelli is an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of Rheumatology at the Medical University of Vienna (MUV), Austria. He earned his medical degree from MUV and subsequently completed a postdoctoral research fellowship in the laboratory of Dr. John O’Shea at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), USA. Upon returning to Vienna, he established his own research group within the Division of Rheumatology at MUV.
Since 2021, he has also served as a Principal Investigator at the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Arthritis and Rehabilitation. His translational research team is dedicated to developing personalized treatment strategies for patients with autoimmune and chronic inflammatory joint diseases. As an active member of several national and international research consortia, his work focuses on the role of epigenetic modifications in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases. His team explores bioactive compounds targeting epigenetic pathways as potential novel therapies. Within the framework of the LBI consortium, his research further investigates structural alterations in synovial tissue across various forms of inflammatory joint disease, including rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and osteoarthritis. His laboratory combines cutting-edge imaging technologies with single-cell squencing and proteomics to dissect the composition of the inflamed synovium and to study cellular interactions that drive local inflammation.
