Silvia Hayer is an Associated Professor and Research Group Leader at the Medical University of Vienna, Department of Internal Medicine III, Division of Rheumatology. She studied Biology at the University of Vienna and habilitated in “Pathophysiology” at the Medical University of Vienna. Her particular scientific interest lies in the pathogenesis of inflammation-mediated joint damage and bone loss with major focus on the autoimmune disease of rheumatoid arthritis. Her research addresses mainly bone cell biology (osteoclasts, osteoblasts) but also implies other joint-associated cells such as synovial fibroblasts and chondrocytes. To get more insights into pathophysiological processes of inflammatory and degenerative joint disorders, a variety of mouse models are extensively studied using knock out animals or by performing therapeutic strategies. Her research group is very experienced in in vivo models, cell biology, histopathology and microCT bone analysis. Direct access to patient’s samples also allows investigating translational aspects of scientific projects. In addition to her research activities, she is also very active in teaching and education of young scientist at the Medical University of Vienna as well as in a Masterprogram of BOKU-MUW regarding Medical Biotechnology.
