He obtained ‚Habilitation‘ in the field of Cell Biology in 2018 and has authored >50 scientific articles (h index: 24). He is actively involved as a lecturer and supervisor in PhD and Master programs at the MedUni Wien, the University of Vienna and the FH Campus Wien.

Stefan Toegel’s main research interest focuses on the pathobiology of osteoarthritis, to which his recent work has contributed the novel concept of ‚osteoarthritis glycobiology‘ highlighting the relevance of glycan-lectin interactions for molecular processes in joint degeneration. Within the Ludwig Boltzmann Institute for Arthritis and Rehabilitation, Stefan Toegel coordinates the program line ‘Pathophysiology of the Joint (PathoJoint)’, and together with Silvia Hayer acts as principal investigator of the research topic ‘Glycobiology of Osteoarthritis’.
